Housing and Residence Life is committed to providing opportunities that contribute to your learning and development as well as further enhancing your university experience.

Research shows that students who live on campus perform better academically and graduate earlier than their off campus counterparts. Your residential experience will provide you with many new freedoms and personal choices, an experience in which you will meet students from all over the world, from an extremely diverse background that will help you in developing life-long friendships, and connections that span the globe.

Living in a residence hall community requires considerable cooperation, maturity, and, above all, respect for others. What you choose to do in your living, studying, and recreational environment will greatly influence your total academic experience. 

A room, apartment or house will come to mean many things to each student. More than just a place to live and study, it will provide a place where college memories are made. Living with roommates and other students provides you an opportunity to learn about others as members of the university residential community, and gain effective communication skills.

This community offers an environment that can contribute not only to academic achievement, but to social, recreational, and spiritual development as well. University residence halls have much to offer, but it is the responsibility of the students to make their housing unit a pleasant and meaningful place in which to live.

Themed Housing provides an opportunity to engage with other students through shared interests, tailored programming, and opportunities to join student organizations on campus.

Living Space

June through November is hurricane season in Florida. To provide for your safety, the University has developed emergency hurricane procedures. Once a hurricane watch is announced on the campus by the administration, immediate action will be taken. Your safety and the safety of others are dependent upon adherence to established procedures. Each resident must report to their RA in the designated area of their respective hall.

Students who choose to seek shelter must abide by all security precautions and instructions issued by the Director of Housing and Residence Life or his delegate.

Resident students who choose to stay off-campus must give their RA the name of the person with whom they are staying and an address and telephone number where they may be reached. This information will be communicated only to parents or guardians.

In the event a hurricane threatens the South Florida area, the National Weather Service will issue warning information through public releases through the press, radio, and television. Pay close attention to official announcements from the National Hurricane Center and the Department of Housing and Residence Life. Do not pay attention to rumors.

In this manual, you will find descriptions of each residence hall, policies & procedures, and services available to resident students. It is each resident's responsibility to read the manual carefully and adhere to the policies within. Please feel free to contact your resident assistant, residence coordinator, or the Department Of Housing and Residence Life whenever you have questions.

Residing on campus within the campus community is an extremely vital aspect of a student's personal and educational development. Research on this experience continues to indicate that students who live on campus tend to attain higher GPAs, have a higher satisfaction with their college experience, are more involved in campus activities, experience greater personal growth and are less likely to drop out. The residential experience contributes significantly to a student's education.

To support this educational development of students both inside the classroom and within the residential facilities Barry University has made living on campus part of its educational design. All new fulltime undergraduate students are required to live on campus for their first academic year. Exceptions to this policy are those who reside with their parents or guardians within Miami-Dade or Broward County or students in the School of Professional And Career Education. The university does encourage new students from Miami-Dade and Broward County to live on campus.

In general, pets and animals are not allowed on the Barry University campus or in the residence halls. An exception to this rule is if an animal is an Emotional Support Animal (ESA).

An ESA is a pet that provides therapeutic support or comfort to an individual who has a documented disability. The animal does not have to have specialized training, but must be able to alleviate one or more symptoms of a disabling condition. The Fair Housing Act (FHA) sets the regulations related to ESAs. The FHA stipulates that an animal kept in residence is a reasonable accommodation if: 

• the student has a disability;
• the animal is necessary to afford the student an equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling;
• there is an identifiable relationship or nexus between the disability and the assistance the animal provides.

Following are the Barry University Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) policies for students who require an ESA:

• The student must be registered for services with the OAS at Barry.
• The student must provide to the OAS documentation from a healthcare provider explaining that there is a connection between the student’s disability and the use of an ESA, and that the student will not be able to use and enjoy the residences at Barry if the animal is not permitted. A form to facilitate this documentation is provided, and must be updated at the beginning of each academic year during which the student plans to have an ESA in his/her dormitory.
• ESAs are only allowed in the residence halls.
  
• Policies related to ESAs in the residence halls are stipulated and strictly enforced by Housing and Residence Life. After the accommodation to have an ESA is granted by the OAS, students must check with Housing and Residence Life to be apprised of their policies.
