Office of Accessibility Services How to use our Services

Use our Accommodation Memo:

After meeting with the OAS Director and providing appropriate documentation of your disability, you will be given an Accommodation Memo specifying your accommodations. The Memo is addressed to “The faculty of your name here.” Each semester that you are enrolled at Barry you present your Memo to faculty teaching courses in which you want to use your accommodations. If you find that you need to alter or add accommodations, you can meet with the OAS Director to discuss such changes.

If You Take Your Tests at the OAS:

Tell the OAS When you are Coming to Take a Test.

Podiatry students are required to complete a Testing Reservation Form every Monday, informing the OAS of the testing accommodation services needed for the upcoming week.

Assistive Technology for Barry Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities sometimes require computer software, devices, or other technology. The Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) is committed to assisting students to obtain the technology and devices they need for optimal academic performance.
In general, the OAS does not provide technology or device support to students for personal or professional use. However, there are times when the nature of a student’s disability requires that s/he have such access to technology in order to function well at Barry. The Director of the OAS will work with students who have such circumstances to evaluate what is needed and to help the student obtain the software, device or mechanical support s/he requires.
  • The OAS currently houses 5 computers for student use. Two of those computers have programs designed for people with visual and mobility impairments. The list of assistive computer programs at the OAS are:

    • Dragon Speak Naturally. A speech recognition software used to turn voice to text.
    • Jaws14.1. Screen enlargement software for people with low vision.
  • There are also text-to-voice APPs that may be downloaded for free. These programs offer a variety of features. They convert text to alternative formats, highlight, magnify, and provide text-to-speech in a variety of natural voices, languages, and pitches.

  • The OAS has equipment designed to help people with low vision to enlarge and read documents, have documents read aloud, or display sentences line-by-line.

  • The OAS works with IT Services at Barry to provide students with the technology they need on campus. For example, if a student who uses a wheelchair is prevented from attending class because of a problem with an elevator, the OAS can set up distance learning equipment that allows the student to attend class and participate via technology.

  • The OAS owns two Bobcat x3 scooters for student use when they are on campus (if the student agrees to and signs a Waiver/Release of Responsibility).

  • CENTER FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND ADVISING (CASA)

CASA supports student success by delivering an extensive portfolio of customized services to first-year students, including first-year advising, academic coaching, tutoring, and academic support services.

The CASA is located in the Garner Building

    GLENN HUBERT LEARNING CENTER

The CASA houses the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Math Lab, Writing Center, and Reading Center. Services provided by the Learning Center include individualized tutoring, tutorials, workshops, seminars, course support, and placement testing.

The Learning Center is located in Garner 113.

CENTER FOR COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES AT BARRY

The Counseling Center provides personal counseling and educational programs. In order to serve all students evening appointments are available by request. Twenty-four-hour emergency personal counseling services are available, for residential students, through their resident coordinators who have counselors’ cell phone numbers.

Testing Policies and Procedures

The following are testing policies and procedures to be aware of while using your accommodations:
    1. It is your responsibility to let the BMS Administrative office know that you are coming to take a test in the office. You do this by completing the Testing Reservation Form in paper version or electronically through the OAS web page. The form must be submitted at least two (2) days before the test is scheduled.

Everyone is entitled to forget to register for a test once in a while, so we will allow students ONE registration error per semester. That means that you will be accommodated the first time you forget to register for a test. After that, we will only allow you to take a test in the BMS Administrative office if you properly registered for the test.

    2. Tell your professor that you are taking your test at the BMS Administrative office so they can either hand-deliver the test and complete the Faculty Testing Form in person, or may submit the form and test electronically through the OAS webpage.

    3. Your test will be scheduled during normal class time unless we are instructed otherwise by your professor. It is important that you arrive at the BMS Administrative office on time to take your test. The time you have starts at the time the test is scheduled. In other words, you are only allotted the time given had you arrived to take the test on time and extra time will not be provided to you.

    4. When you arrive to the BMS Administrative office to take your test, you will be asked to leave your personal belongings and your electronic devices/cell phone outside of the room where you will take your test.

    5. Please be aware that you will be video monitored while you take your test.

    6. The BMS staff reserve the right to deny testing services to students who are caught cheating.

I Want to Appeal My Accommodations

The staff of the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) work diligently to serve students well and to ensure that they receive every accommodation they are entitled to have by law. There are times, however, when a student is denied an accommodation they desire and the student wishes to challenge the decision to exclude that accommodation. Under these circumstances, the student should follow the following appeal process:
    • Discuss your concern with the Director of the OAS in an effort to resolve the problem.

    • If discussion does not resolve the problem to your satisfaction, inform the Director in writing that you wish to appeal his/her accommodation decision.

    • The Director will present your written request to the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Mission and Student Engagement who oversees the OAS.

    • The AVP of Mission and Student Engagement will render a decision about the accommodation.

    • Any further appeal should be made to the Vice President of Mission and Student Engagement, who will follow procedures set forth by the Barry Executive Committee of the Administration (ECA) and Board of Trustees to address the matter.

Anti-Retaliation Policy

The Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) is committed to upholding all statutes that prohibit discrimination in education, including Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008.

Students who file complaints or grievances against an employee or unit of Barry University, including the OAS, will not be retaliated against by the staff of the OAS. Neither previous nor current complaints or grievances will factor into OAS decisions made about the student or OAS services provided to the student. Retaliation against a student in response to a complaint or investigation will not be tolerated.
