FAQS

  • Please follow the IRB Guideline IRNNET 2019 0905 (Handout) to register on the IRBNet. Once you gain access to the IRBNet, you can find additional IRB guidance, forms, and templates in the Library Manager on the IRBNet.

  • There are EIGHT categories of research which, under certain conditions, can be exempted from IRB review. To determine if your study is exempt, please review the category descriptions on the Exempt Protocol Form. You can download all IRB Guidance, forms, and templated from the IRBNet.org.

  • Expedited review of a protocol means that a time sensitive protocol is reviewed by the Chair of the IRB, or by a subcommittee of the IRB to shorten the time frame for approval. Expedited reviews will be permitted for single-semester student-as-PI research. Professors who teach courses that require single-semester research should submit protocols to the IRBNet.org and notify the IRB point of contact, Jasmine Trana (jtrana@barry.edu) with a cover letter stating the course and professor’s name and ask for expedited review.

  • The IRB requires that data be kept for a minimum of five years after the completion of the study. The IRB does not require that data be destroyed.

  • Attendance at the IRB meeting in which your protocol will be reviewed is not mandatory. However, if questions arise about your protocol, the board may table the discussion and take it up again when you are able to attend.

  • Research at Barry University falls under the regulations of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). All investigators are required to meet the regulations for privacy as outlined by the HIPAA. If you are collecting individually identifying (personal) information, you are required to follow the HIPAA Guidelines.

  • You may begin your study only after you receive the approval letter from the IRB office.
