Tropical Depression Fred Update #3

A tropical storm warning is now in effect for the Florida Keys, with a tropical storm watch still in place for parts of the southwest coast of Florida.

The impact on the Florida peninsula is expected to begin tonight, with heavy rainfall anticipated through Monday in the southern and central parts of the state.

Local officials note that South Florida may experience winds that could reach tropical storm force in periods of brief gusts and squalls, and that flooding is the greatest threat at this time. The most likely arrival time of sustained tropical storm force winds in South Florida is Saturday and Saturday night. A Flood Watch is in effect for all of South Florida starting at 8PM tonight through Sunday evening.

There are currently no changes to any scheduled activities at any Barry University locations. The Command Decision Team (CDT) continues to monitor Tropical Depression Fred and will provide updates as conditions warrant.

The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) provides financial support to higher education institutions. A portion of each institution’s allocation must be awarded to students in the form of emergency financial aid grants for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis. The other portion must be used to defray institutional expenses associated with the reporting virus.

In distributing these funds, Barry University has followed, and will follow, the instructions and guidance provided by the CARES Act, the CRRSAA Act, the ARP Act, the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid, and the Certification Agreement completed by the University May 2020. That guidance provides institutions with discretion to develop their own systems and processes for determining how to allocate these funds, subject to certain limitations on student eligibility and expense eligibility.

US Department of Education - Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA)

We are pleased to announce that Barry University has received an award notification that totals $2,513,699 from the Department of Education as part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA).  These Emergency Financial Aid Grants allow institutions to provide relief to students and who have experienced financial challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the vulnerability to a wide range of hazards, the CEMP was developed using a risked based hazard analysis. The BASIC PLAN is all-hazard in scope while later sections of the CEMP provide specific guidance to some of the University's most likely hazards
