Dr. Steve Alves serves as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Barry University College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Born in Providence, Rhode Island (RI), he completed his undergraduate nursing studies at the Community College of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. Dr. Alves earned his Nurse Anesthesia Certificate from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia and his Masters of Science in Nurse Anesthesia from the University of New England (UNE) in Portland, Maine. Dr. Alves practiced anesthesia at Rhode Island Hospital and other settings in Massachusetts before transitioning into the role of nurse anesthesia educator in 1994 at UNE, as the Assistant Program Director. Dr. Alves received his PhD in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island in 2002. Dr. Alves is a former professor of clinical at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, and founding director of the Nurse Anesthesia program. He served as Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Northeastern University School of Nursing for 15 years, and the Project Director for the US Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing (USAGPAN). He was instrumental in transitioning the USAGPAN program to the post BS-DNP degree. Dr. Alves has spoken widely, and has published numerous papers on topics including occupational stress, leadership, preceptor development, policy and reimbursement, regulation of APRN practice, and anesthesia safety. His research on occupational stress and restrictive scope of practice in nurse anesthetists was cited as a landmark study by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and received the Discoveries of Distinction recognition. Dr. Alves has received numerous awards and recognition over the years including the AANA Research Scholar award, and the Outstanding Alumni awards from Rhode Island College and the University of RI. In 2008, Dr. Alves received the “Excalibur” Award from the Army Surgeon General, for his contribution to enhancing the USAGPAN. While at Northeastern University, he received the AANA Program Director of the Year in 2015. Dr. Alves was inducted as a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow in the National Academies of Practice in 2012, and as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2016. He has held many leadership roles at the state and national level. He served on numerous AANA Committees and is a past AANA Vice President and Region 1 Director. Dr. Alves is a former president of the Massachusetts Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and past board member of the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists. He continues his nurse anesthesia practice at several GI centers in Miami.
