Shani Marks, MSN, AGACNP-BC, CCRN, CHSE

Mrs. Shani Marks is a Caribbean native, from the island of Jamaica, who migrated to the United States in 1994. She has been in nursing for over 20 years. She obtained an Associates of Science in Nursing degree in 2000 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2007. As a registered nurse, she worked in trauma, medical, surgical, neurosurgical and cardiothoracic intensive care units and interventional radiology suites across hospital systems within and outside of the South Florida tri-county area. Mrs. Marks has also practiced in the areas of oncology, cardiology, outpatient and emergency department while maintaining certification as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN). Mrs. Marks obtained her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Barry University in 2014 and is a board certified Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. As an advanced practice nurse, she has worked in high risk case management, internal medicine and neuroscience. Her current clinical faculty practice is in neuroscience. Mrs. Marks is currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree at Barry University with a proposal centered around simulation. Mrs. Marks developed a passion for simulation education after being introduced to its use in nursing academia in 2012. Her love for simulation learning modalities blossomed and she earned certification in healthcare simulation education (CHSE) in 2016. She has also been a member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH), the accrediting organization for simulation centers all over the world, since 2017. Mrs. Marks is experienced in high fidelity manikin operations, simulation design, simulation integration in undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula, as well as, faculty development in principles of simulation pedagogy. She has piloted studies in simulation and presented results at the annual International Meeting of Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) conference. Most recently, Mrs. Marks served on Barry University’s Inter-professional Education Project ADVICE committee. She helped design and facilitate interdisciplinary simulations among the multiple disciplines within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences to enhance effective communication and practice. Mrs. Marks is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society, the National League of Nursing (NLN) and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). Her current area of research focuses on the use of simulation in advance nursing practice education. She aims to promote the integration of quality simulation at all academic levels of nursing and healthcare professional programs across a diverse student body. Building upon the principles of experiential learning, she hopes her research will contribute to improved clinical competency and ultimately, patient outcomes.
