Biography

Dr. Michael J. Alicea, is currently an Assistant Professor with the School of Social Work at Barry University. He is a retired law enforcement officer with over 37 years of experience with both the Miami Police and Coral Gables Police Departments. He also has over 28 years of clinical practice experience in both the public and private sector and has been a Medical/Case Management Social Worker with a regionally recognized hospital network in the South Florida area for over 20 years. His teaching experience includes 25 years as an adjunct and part time faculty member for the University of Miami, Miami Dade College, and guest lecturer at Florida International University. Dr. Alicea has treated a wide variety of mental health concerns, with a focus on the treatment of PTSD and suicide prevention. He has more than 12 years of experience presenting at local, state, and national conferences on over 50 plus topics and subjects related to diversity, suicide awareness and prevention. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as authored and published on suicide in the law enforcement community. Dr. Alicea is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the National Association for Social Work (NASW), American Counseling Association (ACA), and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). He serves as an Executive Board Member for the Florida Family Therapy Association (FFTA) and is President of the Miami Dade Chapter of Marriage and Family Therapy. He has held responsible position as the past Vice President for NASW-FL and Chair for the Miami Dade Unit for NASW-FL. Dr. Alicea has been a guest consultant with a local syndicated TV and cable networks with both Univision Channel 23 and with the Coral Gables Network Television Broadcast Station. He is an Honorably Discharged U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Veteran with 8 years of service (Gulf War Theater of Operations). He enjoys contributing to the professions of counseling and social work and to the community at large through volunteer work.
