Biography

Mariely Valentin-Llopis holds a Ph.D. in communication studies from Regent University, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Her doctoral dissertation examined American and Mexican mainstream media's coverage of Central American migrants during the southwestern border crisis of 2014. Her research focus is on the interconnections of mass media, culture of peace, and social conflicts. Other research interests include the relationship between media privilege and cultural narrative, primarily Hispanic/Latino culture. On the topic of peace journalism (PJ), she co-authored a chapter in a book titled Gender, Peace, and Sexuality: Issues and Perspectives in Higher Education; and co-authored a content analysis study titled “An investigation of the conceptualization of peace and war in peace journalism studies of media coverage of national and international conflicts” published in the journal Media, War & Conflict. She has also conducted qualitative research on the exodus of Cuban unaccompanied minors in collaboration with Barry University’s Special Collections, which was presented at the Eastern Communication Association (ECA) 109th Annual Conference in 2018. She teaches courses in communication research, crisis communication, persuasion, public relations, speech, and social media.
