Biography

Dr. Evelio Velis has more than 30 years of healthcare experience as a physician, administrator, and researcher. He received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from The Higher Institute of Medical Sciences, Havana, Cuba in 1983; where he also completed an Internship in Pediatrics. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Biostatistics in 1990 from the Faculty of Public Health. Dr. Velis practiced medicine for more than ten years in Cuba, Africa, and Central America. He worked as a Pediatrician in Africa from 1986 to 1987. Living and working with African refugees in the Sahara Refugees Camps has been identified by Dr. Velis as the most rewarding professional experience of his life. Dr. Velis has been involved with research and academia for more than 20 years. Since 1996, he has served as a consultant, researcher, and faculty in US healthcare and academic institutions. His expertise includes biostatistics, epidemiology, clinical study design, quality management, operational and performance assessment and improvement. Dr. Velis presently is the director of the Master of Science in Health Services Administration and the MS/HSA-MPH dual degree programs at Barry University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences where he also teaches, as an Associate Professor, Managerial Epidemiology, Advanced Quantitative Methods of Inquiry, Applied Biostatistics and Research Methods for the Doctor of Podiatry Medicine, Doctorate in Nursing Practice, and Ph.D. in Nursing programs. An active researcher, Dr. Velis is serving as co-principal investigator of two funded grants from The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He has recently been appointed as a reviewer for the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) Journal of Health Administration Education (JHAE), the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Journal of Healthcare Management (JHM) and the International Journal of Criminology & Sociology(IJCS). Dr. Velis has published and presented studies related to health services, health disparities, diversity/social justice, HIV/AIDS epidemic, homicide, and other health related events at national and international conferences. Dr. Velis’ primary research interests are in the area of health services, public health and education. Dr. Velis has been honored with the “Apple Award for Leading Educators” in recognition of his contribution to the students of Barry University, and he is a member of the AUPHA Upsilon Phi Delta national honor society. He has been distinguished in the 2011 Latino-Americans Who’s Who publication. He has been recognized for his work as a lecturer and advisor for Clinical and Epidemiological Studies in the Residency and Fellowship training programs at the Miami Children’s Hospital and Cleveland Clinic of Florida. He is an active member of the Hispanic National Medical Association (HNMA), Inter-American College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Public Health Association (APHA), the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), American College of Health Care Executives, South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum (SFHCEF), and American Statistical Association (ASA).
