Trauma Informed Human Trafficking

Although research and literature magnifies the plight and voices of women and girls, the voices and experiences of men and boys are often not documented, leaving boys and men’s experiences inaudible — the invisible sub population. As such, we can clearly deduce that this is a serious public health, human rights, and social injustice issue impacting all members of society; thereby, enlisting all members of society to join together in standing against this criminal network that profits from the most disenfranchised in our communities.

Week 1: Introduction To Human Trafficking And Models Of Practice: A Trauma-Informed Perspective

Monday, March 15th - Tuesday, March 16, 2021

The first two days are reserved for non-clinical professionals, teachers, clergy, community members, and mental health professionals, social workers and medical professionals that have limited knowledge about human trafficking (HT). These two days will equip participants with an understanding of what makes an individual vulnerable to human trafficking, understand the intersectionality of HT, deconstruct the meaning of choice in the context of trafficking, and review the comprehensive and multi-disciplinary wrap around services this population needs.

Week 2: Advanced Trauma-Informed Clinical Practice With Survivors Of Human Trafficking (Must Have A Master's Degree In Social Work Or Other Related Field)

Monday, March 22nd – Tuesday, March 23, 2021

The second module is much more clinical in nature. These last two days are reserved for upper level, graduate clinicians who counsel and engage survivors of sex trafficking in therapeutic relationships. Day three (3) and four (4), participants will leave equipped understanding how a person’s neurobiology is their autobiography, and every trauma is downloaded like a blueprint into the nervous system which leaves individuals further vulnerable to be exploited in the form of trafficking. Innovative techniques such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, Mindfulness, and EMDR are presented and applied both experientially and theoretically.

Sambra Zaoui, LCSW, CCTP, Certified EMDRIA EMDR Therapist

Sambra Zaoui is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Barry University in Miami, FL. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and Certified EMDRIA EMDR therapist, and Lead Coordinator for the Human Trafficking Initiative at Barry’s Center for Human Rights & Social Justice. She has published two chapters: The Lighthouse Effect which discusses the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and DMST, as well as a chapter on Humanizing Sex Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation. Sambra Zaoui is a licensed clinical social worker who has provided clinical services for more than 20 years to individuals, couples, and families with a specific focus on sexual trauma survivors.

Sondra Skelaney

Sandy Skelaney is a Changemaker, Social Entrepreneur and Anti-Trafficking Leader who spearheaded Florida's response to sexually trafficked minors with the creation of Project GOLD in Kristi House in 2007. She is currently a Social Venture Consultant and the Chief Mastermind (Executive Director) at Ignition Fund, an accelerator program helping launch tech-based human rights startups. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Florida International University teaching Sex Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery. Sandy provides training and technical assistance for organizations such as the National Criminal Justice Training Center, Shared Hope International, National Children's Advocacy Center, Florida Department of Children and Families, Traffick Free, youthSpark, Redefining Refuge and many more.

Sandy has a MA from Yale University in International Relations. Her anti-trafficking work included work with ECPAT International in Bangkok, Thailand, and Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) in New York City. Sandy was a TEDx MIAMI speaker and has won several awards for her advocacy and program development, including the prestigious "Women Who Make a Difference in Miami" award from the Junior League of Miami in 2013 and "Humanitarian of the Year" from National Association of Social Workers - Miami-Dade in 2016.
