Allied Health Professions in Laboratory Sciences

The term Allied Health Professions represents a broad-spectrum of healthcare-related fields where highly trained clinical professionals engage in the delivery of laboratory discovery, research and patient care.

Laboratory Sciences Employment Outlook

Laboratory Scientists, or Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists, work with physicians and other critical members of a health care team, performing laboratory tests that are used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Using sophisticated instruments, technology, and highly skilled manual techniques, Laboratory Scientists are involved daily—either directly or indirectly—with patient care. All allied healthcare professionals are vital members of a medical team; working together to ensure optimal patient care.

According the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment of medical laboratory technologists and technicians is projected to grow 13 percent over the next six years.

Experiential Learning

The program provides for internships (Clinical Experiences) at many hospital and clinical affiliate sites throughout Florida. During the internship phase of the program, students receive comprehensive, practical experience to prepare them for the certification exam.

Histotechnology Specialization

The mission of the Clinical Laboratory Science program with Specialization in Histotechnology is to provide our graduates with skills that will allow them to apply scientific knowledge and collaborate with others using verbal, written and technological skills inherent to health care. We provide students the tools they need to engage in professional practices that adhere to the concepts of integrity, ethics, life-long learning and patient advocacy. This mission aligns with the goals of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Barry University.

This degree program is designed to be as flexible and as convenient as possible to provide a schedule that allows students to continue maintaining personal and professional responsibilities while earning a bachelor of science degree.

The Histotechnology specialization provides intense training in histotechnology through a combination of lectures, hands-on laboratory experience and clinical internships.

    Preparing You For ASCP Certification

    Students graduating from the Histotechnology specialization are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) HT and HTL certification examination.* This certification is recognized throughout the country as well as internationally.

    Internships

    The program includes a five-month internship at clinical affiliate sites throughout Florida. The internship provides practical hands-on experience that prepares the student for a career as a histotechnologist.

Histotechnology Lab

The curriculum provides students with a well-rounded education and prepares them for the clinical internship. Students are taught proper use of instrumentation and chemicals in keeping with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. The histotechnology laboratory is equipped with the basic instrumentation students will encounter during the clinical experience phase of their curriculum.

Medical Technology Specialization

Students entering this program will build on the foundation they have already set with their first two years of study in the biological sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. By the time students reach the specialization stage they are ready to concentrate on courses more focused to their chosen discipline of Medical Technology.

Students will satisfy credits in upper-level biology courses, as well as the remaining required general distribution courses, before embarking on the last leg of the program, the Clinical Experience. Encompassing the student’s last semesters, the Medical Technology Clinical Experience provides the student with a hands-on, practical experience in a hospital or clinic affiliated with Barry University. While in the Clinical Experience, students return to campus once per week for the Advanced Laboratory Technique courses. Successful completion of the Clinical Experience is required for successful completion of the program.

B.S. to M.S. Option

The BS in Clinical Biology/Medical Technology Specialization Program provides a strong foundation in clinical biology and medical technology through a combination of lectures and laboratory experience. The medical technology training lab on Barry University's main campus is equipped with the instruments students will encounter during their Clinical Experience and on the job after graduation.

The seamless Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology to Master of Science in Laboratory Management is an academic program available to eligible students in the Medical technology specialization. The program consists of 161 semester hours, separated into 130 undergraduate and 31 graduate semester hours. This seamless B.S. to M.S. option merges the NAACLS accredited Bachelor of Medical technology with the advanced Master in Laboratory Management, allowing completion of the entire program in a period of 5 years. Students completing the program successfully meet the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology and the Master of Science in Laboratory Management.

The Field of Medical Technology

Medical technologists are medical professionals that work with physicians and other members of the healthcare team, preparing specimens and analyzing blood and other body fluids to diagnose and detect disease. Technologists also develop and evaluate new test procedures, perform quality control, educate other laboratory professionals and manage laboratories. Training includes the five major disciplines of blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology. Medical technologists have limited patient contact. The ability to work well under pressure is essential. The granting of the degree or certificate must not be contingent upon the student passing any type of external certification or licensure examination. Students wishing to enter this field must possess manual dexterity and be comfortable using computer technology and operating complex machinery.

    Preparing For Certification

    The BS in Clinical Biology/Medical Technology Specialization Program is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Students graduating from the BS in Clinical Biology/Medical Technology Specialization Program are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT) and American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) certifying exams.

Clinical Biology Completion Program

The Clinical Biology Completion Program at Barry University may increase your professional options and boost your earning potential.

If you have an associate’s degree and certification as a medical laboratory technician, histotechnician, nuclear medicine technician, ultrasound technician or respiratory technician, you can advance your career as a health care professional by earning a bachelor’s degree in clinical biology. There is no internship required!

 

This degree program is designed to be as flexible and as convenient as possible. Classes are scheduled in the evenings and on the weekends to allow students to continue maintaining personal and professional responsibilities while earning a bachelor’s degree. Upon completion of the program you will be eligible to sit for the certifying technologist exam in your chosen field. It is the student’s responsibility to know which courses are required for their respective certifying exam.

    The program is designed with the working professional in mind. Classes are designed so you can continue to work while enrolled in the program. No internship required.

    Prerequisites: Associate's Degree and Technician's License

    Admission to the program requires an associate’s degree and licensure in any healthcare field, including histotechnology, medical technology, nuclear medicine technology, diagnostic sonography technology, or respiratory technology. First-year applicants are considered those who have never attended college or university, or those who are coming to Barry with less than 12 hours of transferable college credits. Eligibility for the specialization programs is not guaranteed and will be determined following two years of initial study in the program.
