Welcome Message from The Biomedical Sciences Director

“On behalf of our faculty and staff, I am pleased to introduce you to the Barry University Graduate Biomedical Sciences (BMS) program. Steeped in a tradition of rigor, the program prepares students who wish to advance as health care professionals or biomedical scientists. ”

Biomedical Sciences, MS Program Length Options

The Biomedical Sciences program has been providing exceptional graduate academic enhancement opportunities for over thirty years. We are continuously assisting students directed by their undergraduate advisors to pursue additional science coursework prior to professional school (DO/MD, DDS/DMD, DPM, OD, PA, and PharmD) as well as those students disheartened by not gaining acceptance into professional school. Thriving in our master's program is a remarkable way to prove that you are more than your undergraduate performance may indicate. Given the staggering importance your success in our program can have on your future, we take great care and intention with our admission process and decisions.

Each completed application is reviewed by our faculty admissions committee. The committee's goal is to admit students who will aptly manage our rigorous curriculum, commit to scientific learning and demonstrate sound professional capacity. While the review process considers each element of an application, we place a strong focus on overall academic performance, specific science pre-requisites, upper level science coursework, academic performance trend, and analysis of any patterns of withdrawals or repeated courses.

Program Length Options

Our faculty admissions committee determines if an accepted dental or medical student completes the program in three consecutive semesters (1-year), three non-consecutive semesters (18 months) or 4 non-consecutive semesters (2 years). All students who pursue a research curriculum are placed on the 2-year track. The committee's decision regarding track placement is final.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A majority of our students are using their MS in Biomedical Sciences to enhance their academic foundation to become more competitive applicants for professional school. Our rigorous curriculum covers many science disciplines that you will see again in your professional school studies. We often hear from graduates that their exposure to Anatomy, Biochemistry, Histology, Oral Pathology, Neuroscience, Physiology, etc. in our program, allowed them an easier transition and understanding throughout professional school. Learning how and what to study as well as studying effectively are also skills that our students develop during their BMS coursework.

We also have students who elect to enroll in our program to make themselves more competitive for PhD programs. Additionally, a handful of students may wish to pursue the master's degree to further their healthcare, research or scientific employment.

  • A post baccalaureate program offers classes after you have received your bachelor's degree at the undergraduate level. A master's degree also offers classes after your bachelor's degree but at the graduate level. If a student needs to become more competitive for professional school, a master's degree is often recommended to demonstrate his/her proficiency in high level coursework. Additionally, you can earn a graduate degree through a master's program which you cannot do through a post bacc program. Students who find success at the graduate level are typically highly regarded in the professional school academic review admissions process.

  • We accept students each Fall, Spring and Summer term. In the Fall, we generally look to enroll between 110-120 students. For the Spring, we generally look to enroll between 40-50 students. In the Summer, we generally look to enroll between 15-20 students. Since we participate in rolling admissions, we admit many more students than the number we enroll. As a student declines his/her spot, we are able to offer it to another qualified applicant.

At any given point in time there are between 275 and 295 total students enrolled in the BMS program.

  • Three semesters is the fastest that anyone can complete our MS in Biomedical Sciences. When you apply to our program, our faculty admissions committee determines whether you are placed on the 12 month track (three consecutive semesters), the 18 month track (3 nonconsecutive semesters to allow for taking or retaking your professional school entrance exam), or the 2 year track (4 nonconsecutive semesters to allow for taking or retaking your professional school entrance exam).

  • While we strongly prefer both cumulative and science GPAs of 3.0 or higher, we will individually review each completed application. This means that you will not be automatically denied by a computer program. We will look for upward trends, extenuating circumstances, patterns of repeated courses and/or withdrawals, pre-requisite coursework, upper-division science performance, etc. If you have any questions about whether or not you should apply based on your current GPA, please contact our Program Director at 305-981-1196 for direction.

Please note that general admission to Barry University does not guarantee acceptance into all academic majors. Also, please be aware that admission to Barry University does not guarantee that you will be granted a student visa by the United States Embassy or Consulate in your country of origin.
