Program Overview MS in Reading

The Master of Science in reading program empowers you to guide students with reading difficulties by providing hands-on and practical skills that can lead to career advancement. The program is state approved and meets the requirements of the Florida reading certification. This certification has reciprocity with several states. Current Florida certification credentials are required for admission to the MS in reading program.

In the MS in reading program, you will study the foundations of reading instruction, teaching language arts, reading diagnosis and remediation, research-based reading- and study-skill strategies, and reading in specific content areas and age groups. Embedded practice provides valuable field experience prior to earning your degree. Although this is a non-certification program, you can take the state certification exam after graduation.

Experiential Learning Field Experience

Most graduate reading courses require field experiences involving literacy activities with students, usually accomplished in the teacher's own classroom and school or community. If you are not teaching, convenient field placements are available. Practicum is the capstone course.

All graduate students are required to take a practicum, EDU 717: Practicum in Reading or EDU 727: Advanced Practicum in Reading. Students design and implement a variety of reading projects which involve faculty, parents, students, and the community in relevant, evidence-based best practice literacy activities.
