History

The Barry Chemistry Club was established in 1993 and was subsequently chartered by the American Chemical Society as an ACS Student Affiliates Chapter in 1994. Every year since 1994, the Barry SA Chapter has won an ACS award for its activities

Purpose

The purpose of the Barry Chemistry Club is to promote professionalism and scholarship in chemistry and the general welfare of its members

Chem Club Activities

The Chem Club provides opportunities to learn how chemistry affects our lives. From time to time we will have guest speakers, career workshops, and our own faculty members talking about their research. The Chem Club also provides social activities such as pizza parties and beginning and end of semester lunches. We sponsor fund-raising activities and host the initiation ceremony for Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society. In the spring many of us will attend the ACS National meeting.

The Chem Club is also a service-oriented organization. We provide peer tutoring for Barry chemistry students, assist in the supplemental instruction-recitation sections, and prep and TA the chemistry labs. We present chemistry magic shows and hands-on-chemistry experiments with students at local elementary schools. We also participate in the American Chemical Society's National Chemistry Week in October with an information table in the Wiegand Science building lobby. We also celebrate National Mole Day, October 23, and Earth Day, April 22. We assist in the annual High School Science Olympiad held at Barry in the spring.

As a community service organization, we also perform service activities such as Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, hurricane relief and collecting Christmas gifts for kids.

Membership Eligibility

The only requirement for being in the Chem Club is an interest in chemistry. Barry University students interested in chemistry, students who are either current Student Affiliate members of ACS or in the process of applying to ACS, and have paid current chapter dues shall be considered active members of the Chemistry Club/Barry University Student Affiliates Chapter.

Dues are $10.00 per academic year for non-ACS Student Affiliates and $5.00 for ACS Student Affiliates.

Let the American Chemical Society help you improve your credentials and accomplishments. Chemistry majors and minors can join the American Chemical Society as Student Members for an annual membership cost less than $40. With your ACS Student membership you will receive: the ACS weekly newsmagazine Chemical & Engineering News, and the quarterly Student Affiliates magazine In Chemistry. Career development publications are available free from ACS upon request. Applications are available on the Chem Club resource center, or from Dr. Hamilton, or by calling 800 227-5558, or from the ACS web: https://join.acs.org/.
