General Information Study Biology at Barry

The Department of Biology offers the opportunity to study life at all levels. The diverse course of study helps you develop critical thinking skills as you examine scientific knowledge from various biology sub-disciplines. Through foundational coursework along with practical laboratory experience, you will develop the scientific skills and knowledge that will open the door to numerous career and graduate school opportunities.

After your undergraduate studies, you may consider continuing your education in medical, dental, veterinary, optometry, or podiatry school. Other possibilities include working with the environment in the capacities of marine biologist, wildlife biologist, or environmental health expert. A biology degree can also prepare you for a future as a researcher or for a career with a government agency. Explore all the options at Barry!

    Classrooms and Labs

    The biology program’s eight teaching labs are have everything you need to study biotechnology/genetics, cell biology, anatomy, zoology, marine biology/botany, physiology, embryology and microbiology.

    With its year‐round access to unique environments such like the Florida Everglades and the only living reefs in the continental United States, you will have additional opportunities for research and observation.
  • Instructor

    Biology Faculty

    Faculty conduct research in a wide range of areas — everything from virology and neurodevelopment to fish behavior and seagrass beds. They publish in scientific journals and present at conferences — frequently attending with student authors.
  • Books

    Focus on Research

    Faculty members conduct their research in 12 individual faculty research labs on campus. As part of the undergraduate biology program, many students gain valuable research experience by working alongside faculty in these labs.

    The 8th annual Life Sciences South Florida STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium (LSSF SURS) was held on Saturday, April 10th, 2021. Of the 69 total presentations from 12 regional institutions, Barry was proudly represented by eight student presenters.

Academics Find the Biology Program that Excites You

As an undergraduate, your future can take shape along several tracks. There are two main degree programs to explore. The first is earning your Bachelor of Science in Biology. The general degree will help you pursue a wide variety of biology-related careers. If you are preparing for a professional career as a doctor, dentist, optometrist, physical therapist, or veterinarian, we have a specialized major that will prepare you for the graduate school of your dreams.

The second degree option is a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology. If you are passionate about the various life forms that live in our ocean’s depths, our program gives you plenty of hands-on experience. Located near diverse marine ecosystems, Barry allows you to follow your interests as deep as they go. For whatever course track you choose, our labs and knowledgable faculty will guide you to accomplishing your dreams.
